She was born in Stoneboro on December 28, 1935 to the late William and Grace (Jenkins) Proud. She was a graduate of the former Stoneboro High School. She was Christian by faith and grew up attending Lakeview Church of God. Shirley over her years worked as a teller at Mercer County State Bank, enjoyed selling Avon and was a member of the Avon Presidents Club, and most importantly was a homemaker for her husband and daughters.

Shirley married her beloved husband LaVerne “Vern” Hedglin on May 5, 1957. He preceded her in death on January 1, 2019. Vern and Shirley were inseparable and enjoyed their time together. They loved going out and spending time with their many close friends.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter; Jane (Tim) Miles of Grove City, son-in-law; Dale Oakes of Mercer, grandchildren; April (Michael) Novick of Sharpsville, Meghan Miles of Meadville, Leah Oakes (Ian Mundy) of Pittsburgh, and Katelyn Miles of Charleston, SC, great-grandchildren; Bronson, Weston, and Taylin Novick, and sisters; Judy Poole and Betty (Art) Fischer.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter; Kathleen M. Oakes on October 13, 2022.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, where family and friends are welcome from 12 pm – 2 pm on Tuesday, October 25. A funeral service will follow visitation at 2 pm with the Rev. Randy Ritchey officiating.
