Joseph Dean SlaterJoseph Dean Slater, 40 of New Lebanon Boro, Sandy Lake, passed away on May 5, 2020. Joe was born on November 7, 1979 to Dean R. and Paula L. “Polly” (Reither) Slater, of New Lebanon Boro, Sandy Lake, they survive. Joe was a 1998 graduate of Lakeview High School. He received his welding certification from Mercer County Career Center and attended Slippery Rock and Edinboro Universities. During his younger years he worked at DePalma’s Christmas Tree Farm and then at McKean’s Shur-Fine. In his adult career he worked as a Quality Technical Operator and a Machine Operator for NLMK, GE, and various other machine shops in the area. Joe had a heart of gold and was known for his great sense of humor. He enjoyed hunting in his younger years, working, and spending time with his family. He was an avid baseball fan and loved playing in his younger years. He and his late grandfather would always talk about baseball statistics together and Joe was recently watching re-runs of games since no teams are currently playing. Joe also loved labrador retrievers, especially his late loyal companion, Bart. He was also very fond of Louie, the little dog inherited from his Grandpa Reither. Joe grew up in the Stoneboro Presbyterian Church and was most recently a member of the First Assembly of God in Hermitage. He was very proud of his 2012 Mission Trip to the Philippines with his church, feeling as though he had helped make a difference in the world. In addition to his parents, Dean and Polly, Joe is survived by his brother; James B. Slater and wife Natalie of Sandy Lake, nieces; Alissa and Alivia Slater of Sandy Lake, paternal grandmother; Helen Arlene Slater of Greenville, paternal aunts and uncles; Linda Carter and husband Bruce of Michigan, Dawne Kellner and husband Mike of Sandy Lake, Ronda Slater of Fredonia, and Mike Slater of Sandy Lake, maternal aunts and uncle; Rick Reither and wife Lannie of Stoneboro, Cheri Mazza of New Canaan, CT, and Ruth Ann Reither of Greenville, as well as numerous cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather; James Richard “Dick” Slater, maternal grandparents, James and Helen (Oakes) Reither, and maternal uncle, Ronald Reither. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Black Funeral Home of Stoneboro. Due to recent health concerns, funeral services will be private. Interment will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Joe’s name to the Lakeview Knothole Little League, 234 Hosack Rd, Jackson Center, PA 16133, or to Strayhaven Animal Rescue, 94 Donation Road, Greenville, PA 16125.
