Harriett Sonk Obituary

Harriett V. Tribby Sonk, 101 of Gales Ferry, CT passed away Sunday night, March 7, 2021 at Fairview in Groton, CT. Harriett was born in Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania on June 3, 1919 the daughter of Harry V. and Bessie Boyd Tribby. She was married to Harlan Denton Sonk on July 8, 1943 in New London, CT. Harlan passed away November 13, 1995. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Arthur J. Tibby. Harriett graduated from Sandy Lake High School, Mercer County, PA and Grove City College. She received her Master’s degree in Education from the University of Connecticut. She never missed a UCONN Women’s Basketball game. She worked for many years in the Groton School system retiring as the Assistant Principal at West Side Jr. High School in 1977. Throughout her life time, Harriett was an active member and supporter of the United Methodist Churches in Old Mystic and Gales Ferry, CT. She was responsive to the needs of women and children in the United States and in Africa. She contributed to the elderly and the poor and disabled. She was intellectually, socially and physically keen and identified and addressed needs wherever she found them. Her sense of humor, faith and energy lifted the spirits of those around her. Her friends – and her wild song birds- will miss her. Local Arrangements entrusted to Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. - Stoneboro. Out of town arrangements entrusted to Byles Memorial Home, CT. A graveside service will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery at 10 AM on Friday. March 12, 2021, Sandy Lake, PA.
